What is Depression?
Depression is a mental health condition characterized by a persistent low mood or loss of interest in activities. It can affect people of any age, background, income level, culture, or education.
Types of Depressive Disorders:
Major Depressive Disorder: A condition characterized by persistent sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities lasting at least two weeks
Atypical Depression: A form of depression where mood temporarily improves in response to positive events, along with symptoms like overeating or oversleeping.
Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression): A mood disorder involving alternating episodes of depression and mania (extreme highs).
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): A type of depression that occurs during specific seasons, often in winter due to reduced sunlight.
Postpartum Depression (Perinatal Depression): Severe depression that occurs during pregnancy or after childbirth, beyond typical “baby blues.”
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): A severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) involving mood swings, irritability, and depressive symptoms before menstruation.
Psychotic Depression: Severe depression accompanied by psychosis, such as hallucinations or delusions.
Depression symptoms can vary widely but typically include physical, emotional, and behavioural signs.
Depression symptoms May Look like:
- Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or self-blame
- Changes in sleep patterns (insomnia or oversleeping)
- Reduced participation in work, school, or hobbies
- Neglecting personal hygiene or self-care
- Thoughts of death, dying, or suicide
