EMDR Therapy
Trauma Therapy That Moves at Your Pace - Brisbane & Sunshine Coast
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process and recover from traumatic experiences, distressing memories, anxiety, and overwhelming life events. At With Grace Therapy, we offer EMDR therapy in Kedron (North Brisbane), Caloundra (Sunshine Coast), and Australia-wide via telehealth.
Our therapists, Adam and Grace, provide trauma-informed and neuroaffirming EMDR for adults navigating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, workplace stress, childhood experiences, and nervous system overwhelm. Trauma can impact how you feel, think, relate to others, and experience safety within your body and the world around you – it can be really tough to manage alone.
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy approach that supports the brain to process traumatic or distressing memories that may feel “stuck” or continue to impact daily life.
Unlike some traditional talk therapies, EMDR does not require you to repeatedly describe traumatic events in detail. Instead, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or audio tones) alongside therapeutic support to help the brain reprocess distressing memories and reduce their emotional intensity.
We provide EMDR therapy for adults across a range of presentations and experiences. Some people seek EMDR following a single traumatic event, while others may be navigating the long-term impacts of childhood trauma, complex trauma, workplace experiences, or ongoing stress and anxiety.
People often reach out for support when they notice:
- Feeling constantly on edge
- Panic attacks or severe anxiety
- Shame, guilt, or self-criticism
- Feeling stuck in survival mode
- Avoidance of reminders or situations
- Ongoing impacts from childhood experiences
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories
- Emotional numbness or overwhelm
EMDR therapy may support people to feel safer, more connected, and less emotionally overwhelmed by past experiences.

Are you ready to take the next step?
Many people worry they need to explain everything perfectly, remember every detail, or be “ready enough” before starting trauma therapy. You do not need to have the right words, a perfect memory, or a clear starting point to begin EMDR. Therapy can move slowly, collaboratively, and at a pace that feels safe for you. Our role is not to push or overwhelm you, but to support you with care, consent, and compassion throughout the process.
General FAQs About EMDR
EMDR sessions may include grounding, identifying distressing experiences or triggers, bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping), and processing thoughts, emotions, and body sensations in a supported way.
EMDR is considered an evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD and is recognised internationally as an effective treatment approach.
Bilateral stimulation involves gentle left-right stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds, used during EMDR therapy to support processing.
EMDR does not require detailed retelling of traumatic experiences in the same way some traditional talk therapies do. Your therapist will work with you to identify the areas you would like to reprocess through EMDR.
While EMDR is widely known for supporting PTSD, it may also help with anxiety, panic, childhood trauma, complex trauma, grief, distressing memories, and nervous system overwhelm.
EMDR therapy may support:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Childhood trauma
- Complex trauma
- Anxiety and panic
- Workplace trauma
- First responders & veteran mental health, trauma and vicarious trauma
- Distressing memories
- Nervous system overwhelm
EMDR can be adapted to support neurodivergent individuals, with attention to pacing, sensory needs, regulation, communication preferences, and safety.
Some people experience emotional intensity during or between sessions, while others notice more subtle changes. Your therapist will support grounding, regulation, and coping strategies throughout the process.
