What is Trauma?

Trauma

Trauma refers to experiences that overwhelm your ability to cope, often leaving you feeling unsafe, shocked, helpless, or unable to process what happened. Trauma can arise from a single life-threatening event (e.g., accident, assault, natural disaster) or from chronic experiences like ongoing abuse, neglect, or interpersonal violations.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event. It’s more than normal stress — symptoms persist and significantly affect daily life. Common features include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks and nightmares
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Negative beliefs about yourself, others or the world
  • Heightened arousal and reactivity (e.g. irritability, hypervigilance)

These responses often continue well beyond the initial event and can interfere with relationships, work, and wellbeing.

Complex PTSD (CPTSD)

Complex PTSD can develop after long-term, repeated trauma, such as prolonged childhood abuse, chronic interpersonal trauma, or ongoing domestic violence. In addition to typical PTSD symptoms, CPTSD can involve:

  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Deep-seated feelings of shame or guilt
  • Persistent negativity about self or others
  • Problems with relationships or maintaining trust
  • A weakened sense of identity and self-worth

CPTSD may require more extended, relational, and stabilisation-focused therapy that addresses emotional regulation and relational impacts alongside traumatic memories.

Trauma symptoms can vary widely but typically include physical, emotional, and behavioural signs.
