Can WorkCover Pay for Counselling in Queensland?

A workplace injury can affect so much more than your body. You may be dealing with pain, medical appointments, time away from work, financial stress, pressure to return before you feel ready, or uncertainty about what your future looks like. For some people, the hardest part of a workplace injury is not only the injury itself, but the emotional and psychological impact that follows.

You might feel anxious, frustrated, numb, overwhelmed, isolated, angry, or unsure how to cope. You may be sleeping poorly, replaying what happened, worrying about returning to work, or feeling like no one really understands what you are going through.

This is where psychological support through counselling may help you and often can be provided through WorkCover.

What is WorkCover counselling?

In Queensland, some injured workers may be able to access counselling support through WorkCover Queensland. This is often referred to as Adjustment to Injury Counselling.

Adjustment to Injury Counselling is designed to support people who are finding it difficult to cope with the impact of a workplace injury or illness. This may include adjusting to pain, reduced capacity, time away from work, changes in routine, stress about finances, or worry about returning to the workplace.

Counselling is not about telling you to “just think positive” or rushing you back to work before you feel ready. It is about helping you understand what you are experiencing, build coping strategies, and feel more supported through your recovery.

You may benefit from WorkCover counselling if you are:

  • Feeling anxious about returning to work
  • Struggling with pain, sleep, or frustration
  • Feeling low, flat, angry, or overwhelmed
  • Avoiding usual activities because of your injury
  • Finding it hard to communicate with your workplace
  • Feeling unsupported, misunderstood, or isolated
  • Having nightmares, flashbacks, or distress after a workplace incident
  • Worrying about surgery, treatment, recovery, or your future capacity
  • Feeling like your injury has changed your confidence, identity, or independence

These responses can be common after a workplace injury, especially when your usual role, routine, income, or sense of self has been disrupted.

Who can access WorkCover counselling?

Access to counselling depends on your individual claim, needs, and approval through WorkCover Queensland or a self-insurer.

Often, a GP, treating health professional, employer, rehabilitation provider, claims contact, or family member may notice that extra emotional support could be helpful. You can also raise this yourself if you feel you are not coping or need support with the psychological impact of your injury.

If you are unsure whether counselling can be included as part of your claim, you can speak with your WorkCover contact, GP, or rehabilitation provider.
