You may have heard of EMDR and wondered if it could help you. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from the emotional impact of trauma and distressing life experiences.
At With Grace Therapy, we are excited to offer EMDR as an additional therapy option for clients seeking relief from trauma, anxiety, and ongoing emotional pain especially when talking alone hasn’t been enough.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR is a structured psychological therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or “stuck” in the nervous system.
Traumatic experiences whether they are big or small can become stored in the brain in a way that keeps the emotional response active long after the event has passed. This can show up as:
- Panic or strong emotional reactions
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Feeling “on edge” or easily overwhelmed
- Avoidance of reminders
- A constant sense of shame, fear, or emotional pain without always knowing why
EMDR uses gentle bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to help the brain safely process these experiences. It allows the nervous system to complete its natural healing process and move the memory from a place of threat into a part of the brain where it can be remembered without being relived.
Importantly, EMDR does not require you to go into graphic detail about your trauma. Many clients find this approach more tolerable and less overwhelming than traditional talk therapy alone.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR was originally developed for trauma and PTSD, but research and practice now support its use across a wide range of concerns, including:
- Trauma and complex trauma
- PTSD
- Anxiety and panic
- Childhood trauma
- Grief and loss
- Phobias
- Medical trauma
- Attachment wounds
- Emotional neglect
- Distressing memories from relationships
- Low self-worth rooted in past experiences
EMDR may be particularly helpful for people who:
- Feel stuck despite trying therapy before
- Understand their problems logically but still feel emotionally overwhelmed
- Are triggered easily and don’t know why
- Want deeper healing, not just coping strategies
How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR works with how your brain naturally processes information. When a memory becomes “stuck,” it remains emotionally charged. EMDR helps your brain:
- Reprocess distressing memories
- Reduce emotional intensity
- Restore a sense of safety
- Shift negative beliefs (e.g. “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault”)
- Strengthen self-worth and resilience
Clients often report that after EMDR:
- The memory feels distant or neutral rather than intense
- Triggers reduce or disappear
- Emotional reactions soften
- Self-belief improves
- They feel calmer and more grounded
What Does EMDR Therapy Look Like?
EMDR sessions are structured but flexible and always client-led. Your therapist will guide you through:
- Building safety, coping skills, and trust
- Identifying memories or experiences to work through
- Using bilateral stimulation
- Processing at your pace
- Integrating new insights and emotional relief
You remain in control of your process at all times. Therapy happens gently, safely, and collaboratively.
Is EMDR Right For You?
If you carry memories that still hurt, if your body reacts before your mind can explain why, or if you feel trapped by experiences from your past – EMDR may help you find relief where other therapies have not.
Healing does not mean forgetting.
Healing means remembering without pain.
